Historical Uses

Previously, it was used to induce abortions and treat menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding).

Neurology (Headache Management):

Migraine Headaches

Ergotamine and Dihydroergotamine (DHE) are used to treat acute, severe migraine and cluster headaches. They act by constricting dilated blood vessels in the brain.

Vascular Headaches

They are used when triptans are ineffective, typically as a second-line treatment due to side effects.

Endocrinology:

Hyperprolactinemia

Bromocriptine (a semisynthetic ergot derivative) is used to control high levels of the hormone prolactin, treating conditions like galactorrhea, infertility, and prolactin-secreting tumors (prolactinomas).

Acromegaly

Used in the management of acromegaly (excess growth hormone).

Geriatrics & Neurology:

Senile Dementia/Cognitive Decline

Dihydroergotoxine (ergoloid mesylates) has been used to treat symptoms of idiopathic mental decline in elderly patients, although its efficacy is considered moderate.

Parkinson’s Disease

Pergolide and cabergoline (ergot-derived dopamine agonists) have been used in the treatment of Parkinson's.
